On the southern edge of Crissy Field in the Presidio National Historic Landmark District, a former U.S. Army airfield hangar and office building was fully rehabilitated to consolidate the National Park Service’s Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) Facility Management South District operations. The 20,000 sf structure now serves as a maintenance and operations hub, complete with carpenter and sign shops, warehouse space, covered storage for maintenance equipment and tractors and administrative offices. These functions had previously been dispersed across 16 locations in the Presidio and GGNRA, and the renovation significantly improves efficiency and daily working conditions for the 33 employees that now work at this location.
The project includes a complete seismic retrofit of the original metal frame and trusses, replacement of the hollow clay tile infill walls, and comprehensive upgrades to meet current life safety, accessibility, and building codes while preserving the building’s historic character. The original wood windows, doors, and skylights were carefully restored in alignment with the Department of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. Custom lightweight cast-stone windowsills replicate the original concrete sills, reducing weight while maintaining historic accuracy and easing installation. The building’s original identity was reinforced with replication of the large block letters spelling “Crissy Field” on the new metal roof.
Recognized with an ENR Award, the rehabilitation strengthens long-term stewardship of the Presidio and enhances the operations of the NPS teams caring for park resources in San Francisco, Marin and San Mateo counties.
