Located on a 475-acre site near Santa Rosa, Camp Newman is a year-round camp hosting up to 700 campers and staff in summer and retreat groups during the school year. The Union for Reform Judaism acquired the site in 1990, along with a collection of outdated 1950s buildings and infrastructure.
Siegel & Strain facilitated a collaborative design process with Camp Newman staff, campers, and URJ Board members, creating a master plan for a 20-year campus update. The plan established camper-centered design criteria and ambitious sustainability goals for energy efficiency and renewable resources. S&S designed a 700-seat dining hall, 400-person amphitheater, administration/infirmary building, and nine camper lodges housing nearly 300 people, which were constructed over five years. All site utilities were upgraded or replaced.
After 80 percent of camp buildings were destroyed by wildfire in 2017, Siegel & Strain facilitated a new master planning process bringing staff, campers, alumni, and URJ members back to the table to collaborate again. The resulting plan focused on villages that function as camp housing in the summer and retreat areas during the off season. The new Community Center, completed in 2021, was the first central gathering space back on camp, allowing campers to return even as rebuilding continued.
