The Mono Lake Committee, a non-profit foundation dedicated to saving Mono Lake and to a broader agenda of water conservation, is building a new Outdoor Education Center to teach school children and community groups about the effects of the over-consumption of water on the unique Mono Basin eco-system and on other distant ecosystems.
The Center will include a dining hall, classrooms, administration building, bathhouse and bunkhouses. The design places strong emphasis on water conservation and a wide variety of strategies will be employed including: minimal landscaping, on-site wastewater treatment, and rainwater harvesting. This conservation ethic will be carried through other aspects of the design from the use of resource efficient building materials, to strategies to reduce energy use, to production of power on site by a photovoltaic system. The project will seek a LEED™ rating.
