Our design approach begins with an exploration of the site and context, and of the client’s program. Understanding a particular place and the client’s mission are critical to our design process.

Our design goal is to create buildings that are simple but not ordinary. Our intent is to create unpretentious, comfortable buildings with a natural complexity that develops from the design constraints.

We believe that collaboration between client and designer and between members of the design team leads to innovation.  Our best designs have been a result of these reciprocal relationships.

As we have developed our sustainable design practice, a sustainable ethic has found its way into the rest of our practice. We have come to understand that sustainability has meaning beyond practical and technical knowledge: buildings must be visually and functionally durable.

While ecological considerations are integral to our design process, we understand that other design requirements often override ideal environmental performance goals. We find that resolving (or highlighting) these conflicting needs provides interesting design opportunities that push us beyond conventional solutions.
